The Young and the Young at Heart

by Joy and Jerry Lancaster

2009! I have been reminiscing about events that have affected my life, and one of those events happened when a very special “shelter dog” adopted our family.

Keri had asked for a dog since the time she could talk, but we kept saying “no” because of allergies, and any other reason we could think of. Finally, (unbeknownst to me), when Keri was in high school, Grampy relented, and went on a search for just the right dog for her. He said later that he thought of what a wonderful daughter Keri was, and how she rarely asked for ANYTHING, and he wanted to do something to show his love and respect for her. He hit a home run when he chose a little golden retriever/cocker spaniel mix. We were all TOTALLY surprised when he walked in the door with her. We were in love! Keri named her Karrmayne Carol (after her high school coach and her “favorite aunt”) but decided that K.C. would be easier to call her by. I recently wrote down for my family what K.C. would say if she could talk:

“Thanks, Dad for taking so much time in picking me out for someone who has always been very special to you and me both—Keri! She always wanted a dog, and I am so glad that I am the dog you chose! She has been such a good master—she loved me unconditionally, and we always have had such a blast together—skateboarding down the street, LOTS of walks together, and trips to special places—like Downtown Disney. When she left for college, and then got married and moved away, I never forgot her. I still get so excited when she comes “home”! Now I spend more time lying on the couch, but you can see the smile on my face when I remember those times!

I’m glad THIS is my family—I get lots of lovin’ and back rubs and head pats, and I never have to worry that anyone will mistreat me. I have always tried to “be there” when anyone needs extra TLC too. When Keri left, Kristen and Erika stepped right in and made me feel special and loved, and now you and Mom have taken over! Thanks!

And Dad, thanks for my “refuge” under the table while you study. You know just the right spot on my belly to rub with your foot! And those storms?! Thanks for letting me sit with you...that always makes me feel better! I’m so glad you chose me, Dad, to be a part of this family. It has been a great ride!”
