Opportunities to Love
by Kelly Seiter
We all have opportunities every day to love others. Showing love is and always has been easy for me. I am passionate about life and people and the mission that God has called me to…wife, mom, friend, teacher and coach. I am a lifetime “cheerleader.” One of my gifts is encouragement and people find my enthusiasm to be contagious. A mentor of mine once told me that the greatest gift you can give someone is to notice and acknowledge them. I also learned that t-i-m-e = l-o-v-e. These two thoughts combined make up a strong core value for me.
I love by teaching Physical Education to preschool and elementary age children at KCS. My students know that I love them. Why? Because I make learning fun and challenging and I encourage them with words, hugs and high fives as they learn new skills and concepts. In my subject area there is great emphasis on the literal condition of the heart as related to fitness but I have found that I spend much more time teaching qualities that strengthen the emotional and spiritual condition of the heart. “Share, care and play fair” and “Be good sports, not just good at sports” are constant themes in my classroom. I also know their names. Have you ever thought about how important it is to you that someone knows your name? Just hearing our name makes us feel important. Isn’t that part of knowing and loving?
I also have the privilege of loving through coaching an awesome cheerleading squad of junior high girls. In addition to being spirit leaders while learning and showing the technical side of cheerleading they have worked hard this year to meet their squad goal of being loving to everyone both on and off the field. We hug a lot, write encouraging notes, decorate lockers and spend time building memories on “adventures” outside of school.
Finally, my greatest opportunity to love is by spending quality time with the people who are most important to me. I have been blessed with awesome friends and family. My husband Dale and my five year old son Noah and three year old daughter Avery and I love each other deeply…the way that God tells us to in John 15:12—to love one another as He has loved us. Isn’t love after all the greatest gift you can give to someone?
