Isn’t It Romantic?

by Martha Bolton

When it comes to romance, my husband is much more demonstrative than I am. He holds me tightly in his arms… especially when we’re passing a half-price sale in progress. He leaves loving little notes in my purse. I leave notes in his wallet, too. Just last night I wrote, “My love is a garden, you are the sun. I took the twenty and left the one.” And at least once a week he takes me out for a cozy dinner for two by candlelight. Not only does he go to all the trouble of reserving our special booth at Chick-fil-a, but he even gets written permission from the manager to light the candle.

I may not go to such extremes when showing my love, but I do plenty of other amorous things. I play soft, romantic music every night. (It’s not my fault he can’t hear it over the smoke alarm going off in the kitchen.) On special occasions I like to dab a little expensive perfume behind each ear. (When it mixes with the Ben Gay fumes rising from my shoulders, I’m nothing short of irresistible.) I believe in dressing romantically, too. All my flannel pajamas have little hearts on them, and my reindeer house-slippers are both winking. And when my husband came home the other night, I greeted him dressed from head to toe in romantic lace. (All right, on my way to the door I tripped over a dinning room chair and got tangled up in the tablecloth, but he didn’t know that.)

Still, whether the lights are turned up or turned down, whether he’s whispering sweet nothings in my ear or asking if I paid the Visa bill, whether we’re listening to Sinatra or the music that’s blaring from our son’s room, we both realize how important it is to keep the romance alive in a marriage. After all, it’s the honeymoon that should be lasting a lifetime, not just the payments on it.
