St. Patrick's Day Craft

This St. Patrick’s Day craft is a lot of fun for the kids to put together and the best part is that it can be used a table decoration to hold chips when you are finished. We filled our hat with green tortilla chips from our local Sweetbay Supermarket; however you can use this cute leprechaun hat for a multitude of things, just make sure you and your kids have fun.

What you will need for this craft:

  • One cleaned out ½ gallon round ice cream container (Blue Bell containers work great and the ice cream is delicious)
  • Scotch tape (however double stick tape would work best)
  • Large circular object – a few inches larger than the ice cream container
  • Construction paper: 3 or 4 sheets of Green, 1 sheet yellow, 1 sheet black
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pen

How to make it:

  1. Trace around the large circular object on the green construction paper and cut out the circle.
  2. Use the tape to adhere the circle to the bottom of the ice cream container.
  3. Cut additional green construction paper to fit around the outside of the container. You may need 2 pieces.
  4. Use tape to adhere the paper around the container.
  5. Cut a strip of black construction paper, about 2” wide.
  6. Cut a 4” square from the yellow construction paper.
  7. Cut a rectangle from the center of the yellow sqare, about 1¼” × 2”.
  8. Lay the black band around the hat, about 1” above the brim. Cut off any excess paper.
  9. Lay the yellow buckle over the band as shown in the sample. Once the layout is satisfactory, tape the band and buckle in place.
  10. Fill with green tortilla chips or another St. Patrick’s Day treat, and start your celebration!
