This St. Patrick’s Day craft is a lot of fun for the kids to put together and the best part is that it can be used a table decoration to hold chips when you are finished. We filled our hat with green tortilla chips from our local Sweetbay Supermarket; however you can use this cute leprechaun hat for a multitude of things, just make sure you and your kids have fun.
What you will need for this craft:
- One cleaned out ½ gallon round ice cream container (Blue Bell containers work great and the ice cream is delicious)
- Scotch tape (however double stick tape would work best)
- Large circular object – a few inches larger than the ice cream container
- Construction paper: 3 or 4 sheets of Green, 1 sheet yellow, 1 sheet black
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pen
How to make it:
- Trace around the large circular object on the green construction paper and cut out the circle.
- Use the tape to adhere the circle to the bottom of the ice cream container.
- Cut additional green construction paper to fit around the outside of the container. You may need 2 pieces.
- Use tape to adhere the paper around the container.
- Cut a strip of black construction paper, about 2” wide.
- Cut a 4” square from the yellow construction paper.
- Cut a rectangle from the center of the yellow sqare, about 1¼” × 2”.
- Lay the black band around the hat, about 1” above the brim. Cut off any excess paper.
- Lay the yellow buckle over the band as shown in the sample. Once the layout is satisfactory, tape the band and buckle in place.
- Fill with green tortilla chips or another St. Patrick’s Day treat, and start your celebration!
