Helping Others

Parents, we are our children’s most influential teachers. And teaching your children to care for others is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Psychologists tell us that when children are made aware of the importance of helping others, they become better rounded and emotionally aware. They become leaders. They become productive. While there are numerous ways to teach children how to help others, here are just a few suggestions that can get you started.

  1. Set the example – Children learn by watching and imitating those around them. By watching you help those in need, your children will learn from your example. Always remember that your children will likely follow your actions not your words.
  2. Help the elderly – No matter the age of your children, it is never too early or too late to teach them to respect the elderly.
  3. Give to others – As early as possible, get your child into the habit of giving. Whether they donate their toys to charity or they help set the table, giving to others will help teach children to care about those around them.
  4. Volunteer together – Consider your child’s interests or talents and then find a volunteer organization that the whole family can participate in.

In closing, be sure to show your approval when you see your children acting generously. It may even encourage them to find more ways to help others!

Clara Barton was known as the Angel of the Battlefield for her work among the wounded during the Civil War. As the founder of the American Red Cross, she holds a place among America’s greatest pioneers of compassion.

After the Civil War, Clara knew first hand the devastating effect war and other calamities can have on men and on families. At 72 years of age, Clara Barton pioneered the cause of the American Red Cross and she eventually convinced the U.S. Government that it should have an active part in helping those in need.

“There are many other calamities that befall mankind,” she said. “Earthquakes, floods, forest fires, epidemics, tornadoes. These disasters strike suddenly, killing and wounding many, leaving others homeless and starving. The Red Cross should stretch out a hand of help to all such victims, no matter where such disasters befall.”

Today, the International Red Cross brings help to millions of people all over the world. This was Clara Barton’s wonderful idea. Her great courage, great love and great charity are an example to us all.

George Washington Carver: “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these.”
