While The Hungry Wife gets some much needed rest from the holidays, I, The Hungry Dad, find myself actually getting hungry here on the couch as I think back to our wonderful lunch visit at C.D. Roma’s. I can almost smell a warm aroma of homemade Italian in the air! The fresh pasta, the secret sauce, the numerous cheeses blending it all together . . . Can I really make it through this article without a nibble of something savory?!
Our latest trip to St. Petersburg, just south of Tyrone Mall, landed us in the parking lot of a deceiving structure; for, sitting there alongside 66th, was a stand-alone building with incredible delights to be experienced inside. No guy waving a sign with pasta and meatballs on it trying to get our attention. No flashing lights saying “This is the spot to stop and get some incredible food.“ But it was! It was undoubtedly some of the best homemade Italian food I’ve had in quite a while.
Upon entry, we were greeted with smiles; and my kids couldn’t help but notice the words “pizza buffet” on the specials board. Sometimes I feel like it would be fairer if restaurants had a chance to meet my Hungry Kids before offering such a feast. Two of them jumped on the offer, enjoying an incredible salad bar with fresh toppings galore and pizza that made you want to eat the crust first!
My daughter, who is always after my own heart, went straight to the menu to find fettuccini alfredo. Sampling her plate was a must, and she didn’t think she was going to get it back! There is no “jar-anything” in this dish. Thick, creamy, homemade alfredo sauce covering every square inch of noodle and puddled in the bottom besides.
This is where I find it hard to keep writing. But alas, I continue. My oldest Hungry Boy received a calzone at his seat. The simple fact that he selfishly did not share tells me that this was not a dish to take lightly. His leftovers were consumed without him the next day, though, in an act of pure revenge. So worth it!
The Hungry Wife chose the veal parmigiana. It is second nature for her to share with everyone, so I kindly accepted a bite. I absolutely love food that melts in your mouth! Yes, I did just bite my lip in desire. This is so painful to write about!
Finally, we land in my seat for what I feel was the best dish of the day. Now, I am not one to venture out and try new things. I love chicken parmigiana and this was glaring at me from the menu. But I chose to break out of the routine and go for the manicotti. Great decision! Homemade manicotti stuffed with mozzarella, ricotta and Romano cheeses, and then topped with their homemade sauce! The sauce was so thick I couldn’t even see the noodles at first. My fork dived in and returned with a burst of flavors that are currently making my mouth water. It was absolutely that good!
All of that to say that we do indeed recommend C.D. Roma’s to all the families out there that want to have happy children sing praises to their parents. Good prices and great portion sizes will ensure that no one leaves hungry. C.D. Roma’s is currently reaching out to families with many incredible specials throughout the week. I believe there’s one for every day! The specials can be found on their website (www.cdromas.com), on their facebook page, and of course inside the restaurant! I look forward to hearing about your visit to this hidden goldmine. This is The Hungry Dad signing off and heading to find my manicotti-to-go box.
